Decorating the ceiling in the kitchen is an important task on which the overall atmosphere, mood and appetite of family members depend. There are many types of finishes that come in different colors and textures. When choosing, be sure to take into account the style, configuration and features of the room. Let's consider the decorative qualities of various finishing materials and the possibilities of their use in interior design.
Finishing should combine aesthetics and practicality. It is chosen taking into account the stylistic decision and color scheme of the room. But the following qualities are also important: resistance to humidity and temperature changes (due to the special microclimate of the kitchen); washable (the coating gets very dirty); environmental friendliness of materials; durability of the repair.
Paint and whitewash
These are the traditional and most famous finishing methods. The latter option was popular in Soviet times, and then faded into the background. Whitewash forms a white matte surface, but if you add dyes, other shades are obtained. For example, blue paints a blue color.
Whitewashing does not hide the unevenness of the ceiling and is short-lived. After 2-3 years, the surface becomes covered with cracks, and spots may appear above the slab. You cannot wash the ceiling, as the chalk and lime will get wet. This finish is short-lived and not very aesthetically pleasing. The main advantage is the low price. Whitewashing does not fit into modern interiors, but suits rustic styles.
Paint gives more variety in color range. It's easy to get any shade, light, bright or dark. There are a large number of ready-made flowers on sale. The texture can be matte or glossy. This coating goes well with almost all style trends.
Decorative plasters
This material can be used to create many interesting effects. Appearance depends on additives (mineral granules, cellulose fibers, pigments) and application method.
Structural plaster includes particles of different sizes. The surface is heterogeneous and rough, reminiscent of mountain types of stone. Venetian plaster is similar to marble or onyx and feels smooth to the touch.
Using a spatula and available tools, different patterns are made on the surface: wavy, circular, vertical and horizontal stripes, chaotic.
The 'bark beetle' texture looks interesting - the surface is covered with grooves and resembles wood eaten away by bugs. Craquelure - gives the effect of aging: a surface painted in a different color is visible through the cracks. A more sophisticated technique is 'sgraffito,' when several layers of plaster of different shades are applied and the design is scratched.
Tension fabrics
This is the fastest way to create a smooth surface. The material used is polyvinyl chloride film or synthetic fabric, which is stretched over a frame fixed around the perimeter of the room.
Stretch ceilings have the widest variety of designs. In addition to multi-level structures of various shapes, the canvas can be mounted in the form of a dome, arch, cone and other three-dimensional figures.
An interesting solution is the soldering of suspended ceilings of different colors and textures. The result is an imitation of a two-level ceiling, only the height is not reduced.
Another design option available only with this type of finish is artistic perforation.
Thanks to this variety, stretch ceilings are suitable for any kitchen. You just need to choose the right material, color and texture of the canvas.
